Let me start this by saying that I am by no means a theater girl. While there are tons of great shows out right now, I just never make it a point to see any of them. New restaurant opening? I'm there. Trip to the beach on a gorgeous afternoon? On it. Going to a Broadway show? Not my thing. I'm embarrassed to say that when I was asked to see "One Man, Two Guvnors" last night, I totally hesitated. I was a fool, friends.
James Corden is the lead and now I completely understand how he won a Tony Award for Best Lead Actor in a Play. He is a comedic genius and his level of physical comedy is something that I haven't seen since Chris Farley was flinging himself around on Saturday Night Live. Seriously. For more than half of the play, I was laughing so hard that tears were streaming down my face.
The most remarkable aspect of the whole thing is Corden's ability to react with perfect spontaneity to all of the audience participation. It kind of makes the show and leaves you terrified to get up to use the restroom because he halts the play until you return and then makes delicious fun of you when you do. I'm obsessed with it and almost want to see it again. I highly, highly, highly instruct you to blow off any plans you may have tonight and go the damn theater. It's way cooler than you think.
